Currently Available Grants

BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport believes it is of paramount importance to ensure that top athletes who earn so much glory for their country can make a successful return to civil society and the labour market at the end of their competitive sports career. This cannot happen without ongoing further education, learning foreign languages and obtaining vocational qualifications next to active engagement in sports, competitions, and training for the Olympics and Paralympics. To facilitate that transition, the Foundation is running a scholarship programme for athletes with outstanding achievements in competitive sports, designed to further their academic advancement by offering grants in the last month of every calendar year.

Application Terms & Conditions

  1. The scholarship is open to Hungarian athletes who are members of the national Olympic or Paralympic squad, or who are currently training to compete in the next Olympic or Paralympic games following the current scholarship year.
  2. The scholarship is open to athletes who compete in Olympic sports and whose sports federation has signed a cooperation agreement with the BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport. The Foundation accepts applications only from athletes whose applications are supported by their own sports federation.
  3. The scholarship is open to Hungarian athletes who have applied to or are currently attending a fee-charging Hungarian secondary public school, college or university within or outside the national public education framework, or an accredited private school.

How to apply

Applications for a scholarship must be accompanied by the following documents:

  1. Completed application form, which can be downloaded from the website of the BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport.
  2. Official certificate issued by the applicant’s sports federation attesting to athlete’s competitive status and best sports achievements.
  3. A letter of recommendation from the Chairman or General Secretary of the applicant’s sports federation.
  4. An explanation of the applicant’s income status, if the scholarship application is being made partly to that reference.

Applications must be submitted by post and addressed to the BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport (H-1535 Budapest, P.O.Box 769). The deadline for submitting applications is 31 December every year.

Once every year, applications received are reviewed by the Foundation’s Sports Professional Committee. Depending on the resources available, the Committee makes a recommendation to the Board of Trustees as to which candidates’ academic studies the Foundation should support in the given calendar year. Based on the Committee’s recommendation, the final decision on scholarships is made by the Board of Trustees, by weighing up each candidate’s social situation, alongside their academic and sports achievements. Every year, the Board of Trustees of BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport reviews every single existing scholarship agreement and decides on a case-by-case basis about advancing further installments in the light of individual candidates’ academic and sports attainments earned in the previous year.

BOM Foundation for Hungarian Sport enters into a funding agreement with successful candidates for the full duration of their studies. The entire amount of the grant will be disbursed directly to the educational institution where the athlete conducts their studies. Grants are paid out in installments, at the same time as regular study fee payments fall due, in accordance with the School Calendar of the educational institution in question, on a termly basis. The Foundation being of a non-profit nature, scholarship payments are exempt from personal income tax.
